Daily Inspiration Through Art
Design and trading cards
I was totally a card collecting mad man when I was a kid. The most intriguing thing for me about the cards, other than the players, was the design. I was amazed how so many things could be done with such a small space. Looking back it’s no surprise, I was destined to be a designer.
I bring this up with the arrival of RG3 in the NFL. I will again have a chance to collect and perhaps become inspired all over again. Above is a sneak peak at an upcoming RG3 rookie card and I am stupid-excited to try and collect a few!

Ex-Graffiti artist Kaws
Seriously this guy is MAD SICK YO! This weekend I took a trip solomente as usual to The Modern Museum in Fort Worth where the KAWS exhibit is up. I only had about thirty minutes to go through it, but his work alone was well worth it. Being a designer and artist myself I found his work to lie somewhere in between where the two paths cross. All I can say is if you are in Ft. Worth check it out.
Check out the interview here from The Modern Museum.

Batman meets Dr. Seuss
Hmmm, I never thought what the world of Batman would have been like through the eyes of the great Dr. Seuss. I’m more a fan of the dark kick-ass version myself, but these are crazy creative.

Sam Weber: Illustrator
For quite sometime I have been drawn to Sam Weber’s work. Perhaps because like mine, it is dark and he makes use of texture to give his work a very realistic look but not too realistic where it could be confused with photography. I am always amazed and excited to find something new that he has done such as his lord of the flies illustrations. Below is a quote from a Commarts interview about illustration which applies to anyone in the design field. I hope this serves up some inspiration in your day.
Do you have any advice for people just entering the profession?
Try to have a new body of work six months after you graduate. Have a Web site. Look at illustration in context. Create work you enjoy making. Be objective about your work; just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean you should be doing it.
I know we would love it if you have a source of inspiration you could share as well.

Lovely Package
When looking for inspiration or if I just feel like looking, the blog Lovely Package is always a great source. I found this image of Stranger & Stranger Christmas Spirit and fell in love with the vintage style and packaging overall, so I decided to share. Enjoy.

"Even if it is true that the average man seems most comfortable with the commonplace and familiar, it is equally true that catering to bad taste, which we so readily attribute to the average reader, merely perpetuates that mediocrity and denies the reader one of the most easily accessible means for aesthetic development and eventual enjoyment."
-Paul Rand, legendary designer & visionary.
I know sometimes a fear of not reaching our target audience can influence the direction or choices we all make in our work, design or otherwise. But, there’s a fine line between keeping it appropriate and just plain underestimating the level of savvy from your viewer. Sometimes, you just gotta get bold. If no one’s hating it, then probably no one is really loving it either. Or to put it into simpler words (see what I did there), “Meh”. Hey, just sayin’.
Sometimes, the “lowest common denominator” really isn’t that low.

EF: Live the Language
EF (Education First) Language Schools came out with fun, enticing short films promoting the languages they’re teaching. So far I’ve seen the Spanish version, Chinese version, French version, and this English one. Check it out. Great production values as well as excellent use of handcrafted typography by Albin Holmqvist.
