Daily Inspiration Through Art

Trip to Dallas to see Shepard Fairey

So I posted a few pics a couple days ago over Shepard’s new murals in Dallas area and wanted to share about my trip to see one of the Obey murals outside of the Dallas Contemporary. The Dallas Contemporary is responsible for bringing the Mural project to Dallas and Thursday night they hosted a “chit chat” where Shepard got to discuss his work, his history, and what his passions are.

One of the greatest things I took away from it was his message to “the artist”. His message was to go out and make things happen for yourself, you cannot sit back and wait for opportunities to open, you go out and create the opportunity. This guy definitely made the most of every opportunity that came his way and has continued to create great work. I never really had a “hero” or anything along those lines, but if I had to pick someone he would definitely be up there. He is a designer and artist, I hope I can accomplish a fraction of what this guy has with his talents.

Ex-Graffiti artist Kaws

Seriously this guy is MAD SICK YO! This weekend I took a trip solomente as usual to The Modern Museum in Fort Worth where the KAWS exhibit is up. I only had about thirty minutes to go through it, but his work alone was well worth it. Being a designer and artist myself I found his work to lie somewhere in between where the two paths cross. All I can say is if you are in Ft. Worth check it out.

Check out the interview here from The Modern Museum.

Batman meets Dr. Seuss

Hmmm, I never thought what the world of Batman would have been like through the eyes of the great Dr. Seuss. I’m more a fan of the dark kick-ass version myself, but these are crazy creative.

Israel Anti-Drug Authority

McCann Digital Israel has put together a Facebook timeline of a fictional Adam Barak juxtaposing a year with and a year without drugs. It is an interesting anti-drug campaign and it will be interesting to follow over the next year.

Sam Weber: Illustrator

For quite sometime I have been drawn to Sam Weber’s work. Perhaps because like mine, it is dark and he makes use of texture to give his work a very realistic look but not too realistic where it could be confused with photography. I am always amazed and excited to find something new that he has done such as his lord of the flies illustrations. Below is a quote from a Commarts interview about illustration which applies to anyone in the design field. I hope this serves up some inspiration in your day.

Do you have any advice for people just entering the profession?

Try to have a new body of work six months after you graduate. Have a Web site. Look at illustration in context. Create work you enjoy making. Be objective about your work; just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean you should be doing it.

I know we would love it if you have a source of inspiration you could share as well.

Lovely Package

When looking for inspiration or if I just feel like looking, the blog Lovely Package is always a great source. I found this image of Stranger & Stranger Christmas Spirit and fell in love with the vintage style and packaging overall, so I decided to share. Enjoy.

Commarts Web Pick of the Day visit site

This is crazy cool! Visualize Yahoo allows you to see a storm of email across the globe, and even more noteworthy the amount of spam that is blocked. In a digital world where we communicate more through email and digital means than face-to-face it’s definitely worth two seconds of your time.

The World From a Different View

Note: No humans were seriously injured during the taking of this photo.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.  In this case, that is certainly true.  To most anyone, this is just a random shot of the sky, but to us here at Schaefer Advertising, it represents a truly memorable afternoon.

Today, we welcomed Colton (AKA Colt or Gilbert…more on him later) to our Schaefer family.  To celebrate his first day, we went out for a group lunch.  Afterwards, we thought it would be nice to capture a group shot for the blog to commemorate Colton’s first day.  The enthusiastic photographer (We’ll refer to her as Ms. K to keep her identity anonymous and her pride in tact), encouraged everyone to squeeze in tight together.  As the entire group stood waiting for Ms. K to snap the shot, a bee started buzzing her tower.  Ms. K aggressively swatted at the insect, encouraging it to move on. The bee was not taking the hint.  Ms. K took one small step backwards as she continued to swat around her face.  Then, another step.  And one last final step backwards sent her tumbling backwards over a parking curb.  With her feet now above her head, her back caught the edge of a large potted plant, causing it to teeter back and forth for just  a moment.

Needless to say, the entire group was now bent over in laughter.  Colton, the newest addition, quickly ran to Ms. K’s aid to help her up and ensure she was not injured…such a gentleman.

Today’s Lessons:
1.  Colton is a gentlemen, at least when compared to the others in the Schaefer boys club.
2.  Blog pictures produce much better stories than actual pictures.
3.  People falling is hella funny!

A very wise women once said, “So go ahead. Fall down. The world looks different from the ground.” - Oprah Winfrey

How does it look from down there, Ms. K?
