It’s not fun unless it’s a challenge.

Three and a half years ago when I enrolled at TCU I “thought” I knew exactly what I wanted in life: to find my passion, graduate in four years, start my own business, become a top professional in my field, retire early and enjoy my time vacationing with family and friends.

Sounds like the dream life, right? Well, that’s exactly what it was…a dream.

Fortunately for me, I can at least check off the first two. This May, I will officially be a graduate from Texas Christian University with a B.S in Strategic Communication (a fancy way of saying advertising and public relations). After that, your guess is just as good as mine.

Although I am confident in my career choice, I have no idea what path will lead me there. And I’m okay with that because just like social media trends, life is expected to change. For now, I am happily interning in Account Services at Schaefer Advertising Co.

In the past, I believed that as long as I had a plan and executed it with hardwork I would be okay in life, but with every day in the office I’m discovering it’s an empty achievement if there is no passion behind it.

I absolutely love the amount of passion Schaefer Advertising shows among fellow employees, passion for clients and passion for producing quality work. In less than four weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to actively participate in projects, observe client meetings and help meet deadlines.

Most importantly, I appreciate the hands-on approach the staff has taken to mentor me.

I’m sure, in time the next step of my path will reveal itself, but until then I’m spending it having fun and loving what I do best.

To keep the conversation going, connect with me, Olivia Stribling, on LinkedIn and follow my professional blog A Woman Who Thinks She Can.

Just in time for TCU’s Parents Weekend, CD Ski & Sports launches their new brand campaign.  If you are anywhere near the TCU campus this week, you might see these promotional cards floating around with a pretty great discount offer.

CD Ski & Sports has just moved into a new spacious area, with plenty of room to merchandise their new line of UGG, The North Face, Marmot and Mountain Hardware product coming in this Fall. While the new space is still under renovation, there will be a grand opening evening that you WON’T want to miss.  More details to come on that later.

CD Ski Goes Vogue

Last week we finished our CD Ski & Sports photo shoot for their fall apparel and winter gear. The entire shoot was a very exciting process, especially for me because it was my first photo shoot!

So much more goes on behind the scenes than you think. It took two days and several locations including Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth, TCU and even our office on Magnolia.

Early birds get the great shots. We started at 6:30 a.m. with hair, make-up and wardrobe. Shooting began, multiple wardrobe changes occurred, hair and make-up needed to be refreshed, locations had to be set up and the models needed to be directed.

While that was all going on, the team also had to ensure the photos looked great. We were constantly tweaking details of the models’ wardrobe, which meant running (sometimes literally) back and forth to grab different accessories. In addition, everyone needed energy to keep up with the fast-pace, the caffeine was flowing!

Styling was the fun part for me: getting to choose the looks and deciding whether this look needs a hat or not.  I also saw amazing boots that I want for myself. Guess I’ll have to make a trip to CD Ski & Sports soon.

We also got to use two very cool cars in our shoot. Hydraulics were involved.

On TCU’s campus we got a few funny looks; we were shooting winter apparel in August after all.

All of us!

Check out the behind the scenes footage from our national advertising TV spots for TCU. Ken is featured giving a little insight about the collaboration of the TCU faculty, students, and the agency in developing the commercials. You can watch the four spots at livepurple.tcu.edu. Enjoy!

I’m happy to share the news that Schaefer Advertising Co. is working with Texas Christian University on its institutional branding campaign.

TCU wanted to elevate and highlight the university’s academic experience to prospective students and their families. The strategic goal of the campaign we created is to increase public understanding of TCU as a world class institution with a reputation for excellence. We worked to emphasize the academic rigor of TCU while continuing to showcase TCU’s unique campus experience and culture. There is more to come with this campaign, so keep an eye out.

Schaefer Advertising was especially excited to work with TCU as we have many team members that are alumni.
Go frogs!

I Can’t Even Make Coffee

Making hundreds of copies of project briefs. Scribbling pages of dictated letters. Going on a thousand coffee runs. That is the typical day for an intern.

Ok, not really. Actually, none of those things are true.

After my first week at Blanchard Schaefer, I’ve come to reevaluate my understanding of what an internship is. Apparently it is not slave labor, which is comforting.

In fact, my job is, well, a job. I have actual things to do that really matter.

It’s pretty thrilling considering I’m just a little old junior at TCU.

I start my day doing what I think 99% of Americans do every morning: checking my email. I make the appropriate replies to the major media outlets, chuckle at the viral video sent to everyone in the office, and then its off to work on my projects!

Whether I’m brainstorming ideas for a client, evaluating photo options for billboard designs, or doing research on viral and digital media, my internship projects keep me busy. I’m no stranger to “busywork” (I did go to public high school), but this is different. I’m making real decisions that have real consequences. It’s quite exhilarating.

Then I’m off to meetings, learning the agency trade. All the different aspects creative account service and production are incredibly interesting, and a little overwhelming! There is just so much to agency life!

Finally I’m sitting at a creative brief, chatting about the strategic image we are trying to convey and attending a photo shoot where a food stylist goes into extravagant detail about the color of a client’s coleslaw.

This is awesome.

Fun fact: First day on the job, I’m asked to call the major television networks for some research. I’m talking NBC, CBS, and FOX. That may seem like no big deal to those in the industry, but remember, I’m a 19-year-old marketing major. Quite honestly, I feel like I just conquered the world with a phone call.

She thought she was finished with Interviews

Meet Bailey Lang, BSAPR’s new Account Coordinator.

Where did you grow up?  Tell me about your younger years.  I grew up in Kansas City.  I went to an Episcopal day school for Kindergarten through eighth grade then attended an all girls Catholic high school.  I played soccer and ran track and cross-country for many years.

Tell me about your experience at TCU?  I majored in Marketing and graduated from the Neeley Fellows Program.  I was a member of Chi Omega sorority and the auction chair for the philanthropy committee.  I gave campus tours for the student foundation.  I also did a service learning project for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Previous jobs?  I have interned at the Davey O’Brien Foundation in Fort Worth and at TPN Inc. in Dallas.

Newest Hobbies?  I am trying to learn how to cook.  I would love to know how to cook the perfect beef tenderloin.  Also, I would like to start playing tennis, but I need a tennis partner that can put up with me.

Favorite book?  Right now, my favorite book is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  It is a mystery novel about a journalist who is hired by a wealthy man to figure out how his granddaughter went missing 30 years ago.

Worst injury?  I have never broken a bone before, but I have had some freak accidents.  I had to get stitches above my eye because a crock-pot fell on me when I was building a fort.  Also, I lacerated my spleen when I was in a car accident in high school.  I got caught in the middle of a police chase, and let’s just say, I was the one who stopped the police chase..

Favorite restaurant in Fort Worth?  Gloria’s!  I recently went to Lonesome Dove and ate lobster hushpuppies, rabbit and rattlesnake sausage, and kangaroo nachos.  It sounds crazy, but it was all so delicious!

Coolest place you have been?  I went canyoning and hang gliding in Interlaken, Switzerland while I was studying abroad.

How would you explain your job to a three year old?  I help make all the fancy pictures in magazines and the commercials on TV.  Wait…do three year olds know what commercials are? (laughing)
